چکیده
Observational evidence has been mounting over the past decade that at least some luminous (∼ 2L) galaxies have formed nearly all of their stars within a short period of time only 1–2 × 10 years after the Big Bang. These are examples of the first major episodes of star formation in the Universe and provide insights into the formation of the earliest massive galaxies. We have examined in detail the stellar populations of six z ∼ 1.5 galaxies that appear to be passively evolving, using both ground and space-based photometry covering restframe UV to visible wavelengths. In addition, we have obtained medium-resolution spectroscopy for five of the six galaxies, covering the rest-frame UV portion of the spectrum. Spectral synthesis modeling for four of these galaxies favors a single burst of star formation more than 1 Gyr before the observed epoch. The other two exhibit slightly younger ages with a higher dust content and evidence for a small contribution from either recent star formation or active nuclei. The implied formation redshifts for the oldest of these sources are consistent with previous studies of passive galaxies at high redshift, and improved stellar modeling has shown these results to be quite robust. It now seems clear that any valid galaxy formation scenario must be able to account for these massive (∼ 2× 10M⊙) galaxies at very early times in the Universe. Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Preprint typeset using L ATEX style emulateapj v. 10/09/06
We present new constraints on the evolution of the early-type galaxy color-magnitude relation (CMR) based on deep near-infrared imaging of a galaxy protocluster at z = 2.16 obtained using NICMOS on-board the Hubble Space Telescope. This field contains a spectroscopically confirmed space-overdensity of Lyman-α and H-α emitting galaxies which surrounds the powerful radio galaxy MRC 1138-262. Usin...
متن کاملACCEPTED TO APJL Preprint typeset using LATEX style emulateapj v. 10/09/06 A LYMAN BREAK GALAXY CANDIDATE AT z ∼ 9 1
We report the discovery of a z ∼ 9 Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) candidate, selected from the NICMOS Parallel Imaging Survey as a J-dropout with J110 H160 = 1.7. Spitzer/IRAC photometry reveals that the galaxy has a blue H160 3.6 μm color, and a spectral break between 3.6 and 4.5 μm. We interpret this break as the Balmer break, and derive a best-fit photometric redshift of z ∼ 9. We use Monte Carlo ...

We present spectroscopic confirmation of the Cl 1604 supercluster at z ∼ 0.9. Originally detected as two individual clusters, Cl 1604+4304 at z = 0.90 and Cl 1604+4321 at z = 0.92, which are closely separated in both redshift and sky position, subsequent imaging revealed a complex of red galaxies bridging the two clusters, suggesting that the region contained a large scale structure. We have ca...

We report the non-detection of the [C II] (P3/2 → P1/2) 157.74 μm transition in the z = 6.42 quasar SDSS J1148+5251 after 37.5 hours of integration with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. This transition is the main cooling line of the star-forming interstellar medium, and usually the brightest FIR line in galaxies. Our observed 1 σ RMS = 1.3 mK in the T ∗ A scale translates to L[CII] < 2.6× 10...
متن کاملLuminous Satellites Ii: Spatial Distribution, Luminosity Function and Cosmic Evolution
We infer the normalization and the radial and angular distributions of the number density of satellites of massive galaxies (log10[M*h/M ] > 10.5) between redshifts 0.1 and 0.8 as a function of host stellar mass, redshift, morphology, and satellite luminosity. Exploiting the depth and resolution of the COSMOS Hubble Space Telescope images, we detect satellites up to 8 mag fainter than the host...
